The midge Contarinia washnigtonensis Johnson is capable of causing serious seed loss in Douglas-fir in British Columbia, Washington and Oregon. The female lays its eggs from late May until early July in the young cones. When the eggs hatch larvae feed in the cone scales, sometimes causing direct damage to seeds and often killing scales before cone maturity. When larvae have completed feeding they leave the cone scales in late summer and autumn to drop to the ground where they spin cocoons and remain overwinter in the litter.

The New World species of Trissolcus, exclusive of the flavipes and thyantae species groups, are revised. This encompasses seven species: T. basalis (Wollaston) recorded in the southeastern USA, West Indies, Venezuela, and southeastern Brazil; T. cosmopeplae (Gahan) from the USA and Canada; T. erugatus n. sp. from the western USA and Canada; T. hullensis (Harrington) widely distributed throughout Canada, USA, Mexico, Dominica, and Venezuela; T. radix n. sp. from Guatemala, Costa Rica, Colombia, Venezuela, and the southeastern USA; T. solocis n. sp. from Mexico and the southeastern USA; and T. utahensis (Ashmead) from the western USA and Canada. Available host information for each species is summarized. These species are described and an identification key is provided.

The thyantae group of Trissolcus is characterized by the presence of abundant long setae on the metapleuron. All known New World species occur in the Nearctic, viz. T. thyantae Ashmead (eastern USA and Canada), T. occiduus n. sp. (western USA), T. parma n. sp. (widespread), and T. ruidus n. sp. (Arizona, New Mexico). An identification key is provided and all species are described or redescribed. Data on distributions and hosts (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) are summarized.

A new species of Thoronidea Masner and Huggert, Thoronidea cerradensissp.nov., is described from the central Brazilian state of Goiás. This species is closely associated with stream habitats in cerrado (savanna) vegetation and probably parasitizes the eggs of aquatic Hemiptera. The male of the genus is described for the first time. The male antenna of T. cerradensis is 11-merous and A4 is exaggerated. The original generic diagnosis is modified to accommodate this new species.

The genus Paratelenomus Dodd is revised from a worldwide perspective. Three species are described as new: P. angor [Taiwan, Thailand], P. indivisus [Papua New Guinea, Australia], and P. matinalis [Vanuatu]. Paratelenomus bicolor (Dodd) [Australia], P. saccharalis (Dodd) [southern Europe, Africa, tropical Asia, Australia], P. ophiusa (Dodd) [Papua New Guinea, Australia], P. striativentris (Risbec) [Africa, India], and P. tetartus [Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines] are redescribed. Aphanurus graeffei Kieffer, 1917 and Asolcus minor Watanabe, 1954 are junior synonyms of P. saccharalis (Dodd), 1913. An identification key to species is provided. The relationship of Paratelenomus within Telenominae is discussed; the hypothesized sister group is Nirupama Nixon.

The species M. bicolor Szépligeti, M. cubiceps Schrottky, M. eurycephalus Schletterer, M. fuscator (Perty), M. glaberrimus Schletterer, M. klugii Westwood, M. megacephalus Schletterer, M. pallescens Schletterer, M. porteri Brèthes, M. segmentator Westwood, and M. variegatus Schletterer are redescribed. Monomachus lateralis Westwood is considered a nomen dubium stat. nov.; a lectotype is designated for M. cubiceps; and Monomachus fuscator andinus Schulz is treated as a junior synonym of M. fuscator, syn. nov. A key to the species of the New World and a checklist of the world species is provided. Monomachus fuscator and M. eurycephalus are parasitoids of the coffee pest Chiromyza vittata Wiedemann (Diptera: Stratiomyidae, Chiromyzinae).

The study of tryptophan metabolism using compartmental analysis suggested differences between males and females, and between control subjects and patients with affective illness, patients treated with tricyclic drugs, and those established on lithium therapy. The total mass of tryptophan in the body may be reduced in people prone to affective disorder, and in depressed patients (ill and well) turnover of tryptophan seemed to be reduced. The reduction of concentration of tryptophan in compartment S2 in affective illness could affect protein synthesis.

Traditionally x-ray spectrometers have been designed to analyze perfectly prepared specimens that are flat and highly polished such as 32mm discs. Certainly the best analytical results are obtained on such samples, however in an industrial laboratory it is also neccessary to obtain statistically valid results on samples that are less than ideal in size and geometry. The problem at the TRIDENT Refit Facility is to analyze large metal parts such as pump casings, valve bodys, flanges, and finished piping sections that are going into the repair of TRIDENT class submarines. Energy dispersive X-ray techniques have long been recognized as fast and non-destructive and are therefore ideally suited to the analysis of these finished metal parts.
